My 3D Final Project is... C. Design C ( badges) Cyber Pumas badge Gertz Nerds badge My design for the badges for both cyber pumas and gertz nerds was to create sort of a technology puma. I first research a puma and did the out line but then in the inside I decided to make wires and different metal parts to give the image of hardware. This image would be 1 1/2 inches wide, 1 inch height, and around 2 or 3 inches in length. This was sort of a difficult task was there were many details put into the design and I used google sketch up but the one on the iPad. I had a difficult time working with the one on the computer but on the app it allowed me to have more control of the certain alignments and colors that I wanted to put towards the puma. For me to print this image I still need to ask for more feedback from the gertz nerds and the cyber pumas again to make sure that they like the design and would want to wear it.I think that this is a good design but would take a lot of time to print because of the various designs. I was thinking of creating a circle background and making them into pins so that the cyber pumas and gertz nerds could pin it to their shirts or backpack. To pin the design would be in my opinion easy because there are kits at craft stores that sell the pin set and all that I have to do is hot glue it the design and then it would be ready to wear. There are some areas of the design that I'm ify on because of the way it might print out to portray the design that is intended.
Update
So I started to design my puma badge on the program google sketch up. Since using sketch up it is difficult to include all of the details that I wanted to appear on the badge. Instead I just went for a very simple design that included the puma within a circle that has "Gertz Nerds" on the top and "2016" on the bottom of the puma head. The original size was 35.2 height, 35.1, and 3.7 height.
This is what the 3d design looks like on google sketch up. This is the original template in which I start to make modifications later on to make the design better and more clearer on what it is. The main purpose of the coin is to mak eit like a charm for necklaces meaning there would need to be a hole in it or a loop to but the string through. This was the original template that ?i used to improve the design of the badge.
The first prototype that I create was just the puma head in which I decided to modify a bit. First I cut down on the neck so it would just be the head of the puma. Then I noticed that the words were not showing up so I had to re adjust the location and dimension of it so that it is on the coin. I decide to print in a different color such as yellow which was difficult to read and would be changing that in the future. The words were hard to read so I changed the font and the size of the coin was also to big. Some critics that I got from the badge was to make the size smaller like a coin size and change the color so that it could be more visable to read. In this prototype I changed the size to 35 length, 35 width and 3.7 height. I also changed the color to grey which it looks more like a coin now but am testing out different colors. Here I tried a different size letters and font but will be changing it back because it is difficult to read.
In this prototype it is hard to see any words because of the color and the hole that I tried to create in the top center was to close to the edge and didn't work out as well. The last four badges took about 15 minutes to print. This is because depending on the edits that I make on the badge affects the printing timeso meaning the larger amount of edits the longer it would take to print.
In this prototype instead of making a hole, I created a loop on the top so that it is easier to put a string through it but one side of the loop didn't come to attach to the body so I would be modifying that to make it more connected to the coin. I will also try a different color to print in and make the font of the letters bigger and have more dimension. In total I have 8 prototypes each one improving on from the last one. One of my goals is to be able to have tge loop on the top of the coin connected and the letters be readable. I will be keeping the same size and outline of the coin but would need to make small modification here and there on the coin so that the people that we are going to give it to would know what it is. Eaxh prototype has been improving on the text font and size, the placement of the text, and the addition of a hole/loop so that a piece of string may pass through it to wear as a necklace or charm. I am also planing on trying to print in different colors which is a very easy process to change the color filament in the printer. Not only are the badges going to be for the cyberpumas and gertz nerds but would be also be given to administration and other important people from alliance. The badge is the symbol/logo of the what gertz students (cyberpumas) are able to do and learn. By using the 3d printer, it demonstrates that we are expanding our knowledge of the digital world and being more moderized by keeping up with technology. The amount of time spent on each badge is around 15 minutes depending onmuch of any impact the edit I made it was. Becuase I added the loop to the top the time increase from 15 minutes to about 17 minutes. The use of google sketch up and makerbot is showing our interest in wanting to pursue a field in technology in the future one day and that gertz is taking initiative to use more technology in their school. Thus showing the benefits for having technology items at Gert and to just show our appriciation for them giving us the opportunity to learn and explore more bout computer science.
